27.6.17 Camping details

We are all very excited about our Thursday night Camp Out. Please see below for further details…

  • Lunch for ALL Year 3 children will be provided by the kitchens on Friday which will be free of charge. There will be a ‘hot’ option or a sandwiches option. If your child does not want either of these, please let your class teacher know that you will be dropping a packed lunch off via the office on Friday morning.
  • We will be providing all food and drink from 8pm Thursday – 3:15pm Friday so children should not need to bring any food or drink with them
  • Children are allowed to bring ‘readybeds’ if they are already inflated
  • If there are adverse weather conditions, we will let you know should we need to cancel the camping but we are not envisaging this happening
  • Year 3 will be doing outdoor activities all day on Friday, therefore they should bring comfortable and warm clothing to wear. This could be the same outfit as they arrived in on the Thursday but as the weather might be wet on Thursday, a different/spare change of clothes for Friday is advisable.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Thank you!

Hall Of Fame The Script

Yeah, you can be the greatest
You can be the best
You can be the King Kong banging on your chest

You can beat the world
You can beat the war
You can talk to God, go banging on his door

You can throw your hands up
You can beat the clock (yeah)
You can move a mountain
You can break rocks
You can be a master
Don't wait for luck
Dedicate yourself and you gon' find yourself

Standing in the hall of fame (yeah)
And the world's gonna know your name (yeah)
'Cause you burn with the brightest flame (yeah)
And the world's gonna know your name (yeah)
And you'll be on the walls of the hall of fame

You can run the mile
You can walk straight through hell with a smile

You can be the hero
You can get the gold
Breaking all the records they thought never could be broke

Yeah, do it for your people
Do it for your pride
How are you ever gonna know if you never even try?

Do it for your country
Do it for your name
'Cause there's gonna be a day...

When you're standing in the hall of fame (yeah)
And the world's gonna know your name (yeah)
'Cause you burn with the brightest flame (yeah)
And the world's gonna know your name (yeah)
And you'll be on the walls of the hall of fame

Be a champion, be a champion, be a champion, be a champion

Our Survey about improving lunchtimes @ Westerhope

In Computing this half term, we have been given the task of finding out how to improve lunchtimes at Westerhope by Mr Outterside.

In order to collect information, we have created a survey for students of Westerhope to fill in.

We would really appreciate it, if you could spare a few minutes and answer the questions on our survey.

Number bonds to 100 - Beat the Teacher!

It is very important to be able to quickly work out our number bonds to 10 and 100. We've practised this a lot this week. See how many points you can score and remember to do it again and again so that you are using new numbers each time. I've just done it and I scored 30/30! Have a go at beating that.... :D

Go and sit in the sink.

Swallow it if you like, my love.

Lock yourself in the cupboard, dear.
Run away to sea.
Do whatever you can, my flower.
But don’t ask me.

28.2.17 Nouns, verbs, adjectives or adverbs?

Today we had a very interesting and lively discussion about the different types of words. In groups, Class 7 sorted a range of words and gave reasons to justify their decisions. We came to the conclusion that some words can be in more than one word group but it depends on how it is used in the sentence. Excellent work today Class 7!

Miss Strachan's holiday diary: Today I explored Beamish museum and learned about the incredible history of mining in the North East. It was amazing to see the working conditions of miners, including children as young as six! The mine was pitch black and freezing cold with water that dripped down the walls and onto the floor. In the olden days, miners had to travel deep underground to extract the coal from the rock using a mixture of hand tools and drills. It was an extremely hard job but thanks to them the people of the North East had coal for fires and transport. I particularly enjoyed my visit to the Beamish sweet shop where the walls were lined with glass jars filled to the brim with colourful sweets. I watched the shop owner weigh out my lemon sherbets onto an old fashioned set of weighing scales. The sweets were delicious! The children in the picture are striking for free school meals, something that we still have today. I also looked around an old school and sat at the teacher's desk. In the classrooms there were no whiteboards and most definitely no iPads or smart boards!! I had lots of fun trying to play an old fashioned game with the metal hoop and stick- it is a lot harder than it looks! Have a look at the similarities and differences between their classroom and ours. Which do you prefer? Can you research the history of mining in the North East? Why don't you write your own holiday diary and share it with us next Monday? :)

I will be updating the website a few times throughout the week (perhaps with photos of Alfie the Bunny on his holidays...!) so keep an eye out..

I have not set any holiday homework but it would be great if you could read lots and practise high frequency spellings and your times tables. Use the website for ideas about any other learning you could do when you have the time.

Most of all, have fun! frown

17.2.17 Thank you so much to everyone who was able to come in and read the children's brilliant traditional tales. It was lovely to have you in and Class 7 thoroughly enjoyed sharing their work with you :)

17.2.17 Class 7 had a wonderful time sharing their traditional tales with Year 1. It was lovely to see how proud they are of their work and Year 1 really enjoyed listening to their super stories. A great end to half term!

17.2.17 Today we practised turning a 'text' from Hansel and Gretel into a piece of writing with speech marks. Why don't you create your own traditional tale text conversation then have a go at writing it up with speech marks? :)  http://www.fakephonetext.com/

  1. set: 30.1.17 (Monday) Due back on: Whenever you have done something that you would like to show me!

Choose your own homework…

I have been really impressed with the brilliant homework that you have produced so far in Year 3 so well done! For the rest of this half term, it is up to you to decide what your homework is…! On our Class Page on the website, I regularly upload things we have been doing in class, such as pictures, links to fun learning websites and different activities you can try at home. I would love you to check this out as often as you like. This way, you will be continuing your learning at home. Share your new skills and knowledge with your family – see if you can teach someone something or even challenge them to a times tables competition on Hit the Button!

Here are some of the things that are on our Class Page that I would love you to have a go at:

  • Times tables games (like Hit the Button) to recall the 3,4, and 8x tables
  • Spelling games (with a focus on high frequency words)
  • Practise telling the time (all the time!) on analogue and digital clocks
  • And read! Read as much as you can including books from home. I would love to see what you are reading so write down any books you are reading with an adult in your reading record.

It is up to you how you use your homework book for the next few weeks. If you choose to leave it blank that is fine. However if you want to use it to make notes, record your Hit the Button challenge times or competitions with your family, write about a book you are enjoying, practise your spellings, make up a story (the list is endless)… then I would love to see what you’re up to at any time. There will also be stickers!

Have fun choosing your homework and directing your own learning! J

15.2.17 A Poem to be Read Silently - Can you practise reading the poem we have been working on with expression and at a good pace?

It was so silent that I heard
my thoughts rustle
like leaves in a paper bag…

It was so peaceful that I heard

the trees ease off

their coats of bark…

It was so still that I felt
a raindrop’s grin
as it tickled the window pane…

It was so silent that I heard
a page in this book
whisper to its neighbour,
“Look, he’s peering at us again…”

It was so quiet that I sensed
a smile crack
the face of a stranger…

It was so hushed that I heard
the morning earth roll over
in its sleep and doze
for five minutes more…

15.2.17        Maths

Following on from our Maths test today, can you have a go at these problems?

You have 4 digit cards and you must use each one once only per question. Can you make two 2-digit numbers that add together to make 100? Think of strategies to do this quickly...

a)    5        4       4        6

b)     3      7       2        8

c)    6      8      2       3

Can you make some challenges for me? Check that it is possible to make 100 with those numbers first!

14.2.17 Invite to come and read Class 7's amazing traditional tales!

Class 7 have been extremely busy writing their own traditional tales. The stories they have produced are absolutely brilliant and I am very proud of all the hard work they have put into them. I would love to invite you in to read your child’s story yourself!

If you would like to come and see your child’s English work, then the classroom will be open for this after school (3:15pm) on Thursday or Friday this week (16th or 17th). If you are unable to do so then but would still like to read your child’s story then please speak to me to arrange something.

Thank you,

Miss Strachan

14.2.17 Maths

Class 7 loved this game of number and strategy today. As you can see, it was a very intense lesson..! Why not play this with someone at home and see if you can beat them :)

Here is the link to the video that we watched http://nrich.maths.org/1216

14.2.17 Maths was very intense today!! Class 7 used strategy and forward thinking to try and beat their partner in this adding game...

14.2.17     Stonehenge theories....

In Topic we have been discussing theories about why Stonehenge was built. Class 7 had lots of interesting ideas and used evidence to support their theories. Here is the link we watched today http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/stonehenge/schools/education-film/# maybe you could rewatch it and write up your conclusion... You can't be wrong because not even the experts know for sure!

13.2.17         Tens Frames

Today in Maths, we were focusing on really understanding numbers and how they can be represented in a range of ways. Although we can do simple additions, it is important to be able to visualise this and see it in different ways. We used tens frames to quickly make and recognise different amounts then worked on adding them and what they looked like. Class 7 were very good at talking about their work and explaining their thoughts. Can you represent these additions, perhaps using pieces of cereal or two colour cubes on a tens frame?

7+8     5 +6      3+9       9+8      7+7      8+4     4+9     2+8

Have a go at making the amounts and adding up the counters online http://illuminations.nctm.org/activity.aspx?id=3565

Or why not play Frames Flash with someone at home?

13.2.17 Today we played lots of games with our partners to reprepsent and visualise numbers in a range of ways.

Man on the Moon

Still image for this video
We wrote letters to the Man on the Moon to ask him about life on the moon and talk to him about life here on Earth. We then turned the letters into paper aeroplanes to see how far they would fly... but we should probably look at different ways to reach the moon!

We also had a PSHCE session about the meaning behind the John Lewis Advert and discussed how many people can spend weeks at a time with no one to talk to. Lots of us had ideas about what we could do to reach out to people this Christmas.

After listening to an assembly from the charity Changing Lives, Class 7 were saddened to learn that some people don't get Christmas cards or presents at this time of year. They were very enthusiastic to do something about this and they wrote their own lovely Christmas cards to people who otherwise won't get any.

Here are your homophone spellings to practise over the Christmas holidays

15.12.16 A Little Christmas Treat!

Still image for this video

It was on a starry night

It was on a starry night when the hills were bright
Earth lay sleeping, sleeping calm and still.
Then in a cattle shed, in a manger bed
a boy was born, king of all the world.

And all the angels sang for him, the bells of heaven rang for him
for a boy was born, king of all the world.
And all the angels sang for him, the bells of heaven rang for him
for a boy was born, king of all the world.

Soon the shepherds came that way where the baby lay
and were kneeling, kneeling by his side.
And their hearts believed again for the peace of men,
for a boy was born, king of all the world.

And all the angels sang for him, the bells of heaven rang for him
for a boy was born, king of all the world.
And all the angels sang for him, the bells of heaven rang for him
for a boy was born, king of all the world.

Calypso Carol

See him lying on a bed of straw
A draughty stable with an open door
Mary cradling the babe she bore
The prince of glory is his name.

Refrain
Oh, now carry me to Bethlehem
To see the Lord appear to men
Just as poor as was the stable then
The prince of glory when he came.

Star of silver sweeps across the skies
Show where Jesus in the manger lies
Shepherds swiftly from your stupor rise
To see the Saviour of the world.

Refrain

Mine are riches from thy poverty
From thine innocence, eternity
Mine, forgiveness by thy death for me
Child of sorrow, for my joy.

Refrain

Angels, sing again the song you sang
Bring God's glory to the heart of man
Sing, "Bethlehem's little baby can
Be salvation to the soul."

Refrain:

Silent Night

Silent Night

Silent night, holy night!
All is calm, all is bright.
Round yon Virgin, Mother and Child.
Holy infant so tender and mild,
Sleep in heavenly peace,
Sleep in heavenly peace

Silent night, holy night!
Shepherds quake at the sight.
Glories stream from heaven afar
Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia,
Christ the Savior is born!
Christ the Savior is born

Silent night, holy night!
Son of God love's pure light.
Radiance beams from Thy holy face
With the dawn of redeeming grace,
Jesus Lord, at Thy birth
Jesus Lord, at Thy birth

I was absolutely blown away by the brilliant Stone Age homework projects the children have created! It is lovely to see how excited they are about this new Topic and they enjoyed sharing newly learned facts with each other. Well done!!

Class 7 are learning 'Half the World Away' to sing at our Carols concert on Thursday 15th December. Here is the song and below are the words to practise :)

Half the World Away – (Aurora version)

I would like to leave this city
This old town don't smell too pretty and
I can feel the warning signs running around my mind

And when I leave this island
I book myself to a soul asylum
I can feel the warning signs running around my mind

So here I go
I'm still scratching around in the same old hole
My body feels young but my mind is very old
So what do you say?
You can't give me the dreams that are mine anyway
You're half the world away
You're half the world away

And when I leave this planet
You know I'd stay but I just can't stand it and
I can feel the warning signs running around my mind

And if I can leave this spirit
I'll find me a hole and I'll live in it and
I can feel the warning signs running around my mind

So here I go
I'm still scratching around in the same old hole
My body feels young but my mind is very old
So what do you say?
You can't give me the dreams that are mine anyway
You're half the world away
You're half the world away

You're half the world away
I've been lost, I've been found
But I don't feel down
You're half the world away
I've been lost, I've been found
But I don't feel down
I don't feel down
