Autumn 1

Look at all the tricky sight words and sounds we've been learning! Can you remember the sounds and their actions at home? Can you read and spell the tricky sight words from memory? Can you write words containing the sounds we've learned? Keep up the super phonics practise!

Please know that all Year 1 children now have their Numbots username and password stuck into their reading diaries (inside the first page) ready for lots of fun maths learning at home!

We've finally finished our wonderful puppets! Our DT super stars selected their own tools to join on the backing felt to finish off their designs. Look how proud we are of them!

Next, using our design as a guide we decorated our puppets deciding which joining technique we should use - pinning, stapling or gluing.

After drawing our puppet designs, we worked with a partner to draw around a stencil and cut out our chosen colour of felt.

Here we are designing our puppets!

He tried out different methods of joining fabric to see which would be the best when we made our puppets.

Our pumpkins have dried! Look what kind of faces we can draw.

To celebrate harvest we have been colour mixing and printing using different fruit to create our own pumpkin prints. We can't wait for them to dry so we can add spooky faces!

Using conkers we have been creating number stories and writing them out into number sentences. We have been practising reversing the number sentences too!

Another wonderful piece of writing from a super focussed student. Well done for doing all of this writing in only twenty minutes!

We LOVE Talk for Writing! We have been learning the story of The Three Billy Goats Gruff through reading, drawing pictures and using actions to match parts of the story to help us remember it. I wonder if we can retell the story at home using our actions to help us?

Sometimes all we need is a breath of fresh air. Look at our lovely Year 1 students getting busy in our outdoor area. There is so much we can do outside!

Today we chose a character from the story The Three Billy Goats Gruff to inspire our design of a puppet. We thought about which colour felt we would like to use and all of the different parts we might join onto the felt to make a goat or a troll.

Today in DT we investigated different ways of joining fabric using safety pins, staples and glue. Ask your child which method they thought was the easiest and which was the hardest and why.

We took our inspiration from the story, The Snail and the Whale and partitioned numbers. Our challenge was to find all possibilities.

In Maths we have been using the part whole model to partition numbers.

We have been learning about the four seasons and thinking about how we know it is Autumn.

An outstanding piece of writing by a super speller. This hard-working student has blown us all away with her amazing attitude towards her work.

Just look at the amazing story maps that have been made to help us retell the story The Snail and the Whale.

In Geography we've been learning about the importance of rivers and sharing our experiences of being near them. Look at the fantastic drawings and writing by some of our learners.

Here are some of our super descriptions of the snail and the whale!

This week we have been spelling sounds words with the sound 'ai'.

In Science, we have loved learning facts about space. Here are some of our brilliant oil pastel drawings of our solar system!

In Computing, we have been learning about algorithms, writing instructions to complete a task and finding out what happens when there is a bug in the algorithm! See if your child can remember our Alligator Algorithm rhyme!

In Maths we have been comparing amounts using the language fewer and more and finding one more and one less than a number.

We love reading our new books!

Here are some of our fabulous Snail and the Whale paintings!

We thought about the creatures that live in our oceans and then made a collage picture to show some of them.

We have loved listening to the story, The Snail and the Whale by Julia Donaldson and have completed lots of fun activities related to the story.

We were so pleased to welcome all the children to Class 3 and Class 4. They have been absolute stars, really impressing Mrs Phillip and Miss Ellis with how well they have settled into Year 1.

Well done everyone!
