Autumn 1

So far this half-term the children have been using Darkmouth and Earth and Space texts to improve their retrieval knowledge.

Take a look at some fantastic pieces of writing from some Year 5 students so far this half-term!

On our return to school, the children wrote 'Thank You' letters to the NHS, keyworkers and their carers. USing Darkmouth as a stimulus for our writing, they have written formal recounts - Police reports and School reports have written a Persuasive text for the local council of Darkmouth persuading visitors to book a trip for Halloween.

The children were also fascinated to learn about Tom Wagg - a 15 year-old schoolboy- who discovered a planet whilst on work experience. They have written a Newspaper article about him too.

We are using our class reader- Darkmouth- as inspiration for our writing this week. This week, we are writing formal recounts. Here is one of our Super Learners speaking his recount before he writes it.

The children are loving their Ancient Greece area of study. They have learnt about the important role the geography of Greece played in the establishment of city-states, they understand the chronological context of Ancient Greece and have been comparing two of the largest city-states - Sparta and Athens. The children will learn more about some of the Ancient Greek achievements, evaluate their significance and decide how much they have influenced the Western World.

Our unit is Earth and Space. The children are loving learning about the Solar System and learning lots of fascinating things. We have been inspired recently during STEMFest 2020 where we met loads of influential people in this field. We may not be able to go on educational visits yet, but we won't let that stop us!
