We are very proud of the work we do to teach Life Skills at Westerhope Primary School. This includes promoting British Values, developing the children's Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultural awareness and teaching them Personal, Social, Health, Economic skills and discussing how these are used in the wider world. We constantly review and update our curriculum as a whole school team, listening to the views of our children, staff and leaders and informing our governors. Here are some reviews of this work:

Air quality monitor- Year 3 used our monitor to interpret some graphs. They then made their own experiment to find out where exactly is most polluted in school.
Smart Scoot Training Today our Year 3 children loved taking part in Smart Scoot training. They learnt how to safely ride their scooters - we can't wait to see them travelling actively to school! Well done everyone!
Good To Be Me Day
Wow! What an a amazing day this has been! We Celebrated Children's Mental Health Day with our Good to Be Me Day. We got to have so many activites during this day:

Chartwells Food and Mood
Mindfulness drawing
All of these activities helped us be mindful and think about our mental health. Well done Westerhope!

Secret Buddy Week
We had a super Secret Buddy Week and it was lovely to hear how kind everyone was! Different year groups celebrated kindness in lots of different ways
Anti Bullying Week is finally here! We celebrate this by taking part in Secret Buddy Week. Throughout the week, everyone is given a 'secret buddy' and their mission is to be extra kind to this person. You can share books, draw pictures, give your secret buddy a smile or whatever you want to make your secret buddy's day
We were visited by Gillian Bell from the Parliament outreach team. She told us about the Government and how they run the country.
Year 3 became MPs and created our own laws. We were the government and opposition and had to debate to see if a law should be passed. We debated whether homework should be banned for children.
Sprinkle kindness like confetti ... and Year 2 certainly did today!
Thank you to our thoughtful, caring and kind learners in Class 6 who made lots of beautiful drawings and messages for a poorly young boy who is in need of being cheered up.

A sprinkle of 'School of Kindness' in Year 5 and 6...
We have explored the meaning of 'kindness', sharing thoughts and feelings of what being kind looks like and the impact kindness has on other people.
Our incredibly kind learners in Year 5 and 6 made their own act of kindness for a seven year old girl who had a difficult start to her young life and was in need of lots of kind messages to brighten her day.
What an incredible job they did! The children's messages were so thoughtfully written, expressing care, kindness and positivity from start to finish. Our young friend will be so happy and appreciative to receive them, I have no doubt!

Bikeability
Year 4 had a brilliant time today learning how to look after their bikes, follow the Highway Code and most importantly how to stay safe on their bikes on the road. Well done everyone!

Westerhope had a fantastic day celebrating Ada Lovelace Day. We used the day to promote women in the STEM industries. We loved finding out about some of our most revered female scientists! Fantastic learning everyone!!!
Year 3 were lucky enough to have a workshop about anger. We talked about what it might look like and how to deal with anger.

Peace Talk
Today, Year 4 were very lucky to be joined by Owen and Bob from the CND. They talked to them about peace and discussed what it means to them. They then listened carefully to each other's views and the story of Sadako. Then they wrote down our wish for peace and created our own oragami crane. Then they thought about whether children can change the world.

Year 4 were very lucky to be visited by Jill, our school nurse, today who discussed the importance of relationships. Relationships are bonds and connections. We thought who we have relationships with, how we can respect and look after each other. We know it is important that we share different personal information with different people.

Road Safety Assembly
Today we were visited by PC Skjaerstad and Petra from Co-operative funeralcare. They told us all about how to cross roads safely and the importance of being seen. We even received badeges to help keep us safe. Fantastic learning everyone!

We have been very lucky to be joined by our school governor, who has supported us taking part in Money Sense workshops. Our School Councillors have been very busy organising a special advent calendar for all the children. Each day different children will be challenged to do something kind for their classmates. We can't wait to hear what everyone has been up to!

Premier League Writing Stars
As part of our Reading Week, which this year is focused on Poetry, our Year 4 pupils are taking part in a very exciting competition. They are writing poems all about Diversity to be entered into the Premier League's Writing Stars competition. There are lots of amazing prizes to be won - good luck everyone!!
We are very excited to let you know that we have been selected as one of five schools by Catherine McKinnell MP to be part of this very exciting project. We will soon be recieiving a Hazel tree to plant in our garden. This project is to show the Commonwealth's commitment to protecting the forests of the world. Find out more by watching the link below:
Our Reception classes were very lucky to be visited by two special visitors- a firefighter and police officer. They found out about the important work they do to look after everyone. What fantastic learning!

Feelings
This half term, everyone in school is focusing on ways to stay Healthy in their Life Skills sessions. Understanding their own feelings, others' feelings, how they can cope with difficult feelings and how their feelings can be affected by the media. We feel emotional health is very important to the development of everyone of our wonderful pupils.
