Year 4

Maths Badge Information

Have a look at our Calculation Policy to see how we teach addition, subtraction, multiplication and division in each year group.

PLACE VALUE

In Year 4, before we begin any calculation work, the children gain an understanding of what each number in a four digit number represents. They can then use this knowledge to make their calculations simpler. You can find more information and practise this skill using the links below.

ADDITION

Addition using concrete equipment

To make sure the children understand what each digit represents we completed lots of examples using concrete materials. You can use the video below to see an example of this.

KS2 - how to add using Dienes cubes

A video for Key Stage 2 children and their parents showing how to add two 3-digit numbers together using Dienes cubes. The calculation shown is 263 + 119. Made by St Helena's C of E Primary School, Willoughby, Lincolnshire, UK.

SUBTRACTION

With subtraction, we spent lots of time working with concrete materials to understand our calculations agai . This helped us understand what is happening when we need to make exchanges.

MULTIPLICATION

In Year 4, it Is important that we learn all of our times tables facts up to 12 x 12. Here are some websites to help them learn these facts of by heart and suggestions for parents too.

Multiplying and dividing by 10 and 100

In Year 4, we use our knowledge of place value to help us times and divide by 10 and 100. Find out more from our math experts below!

The distributive law of multiplication

Although this sounds really tricky, it is a rule which helps us work out 2 digit multiplication calculations mentally.

Break It Up Song from Maths Mansion

A short chant that demonstrates how to use multiplication facts you DO know to figure out multiplication facts you don't know.

DIVISION

We have been dividing 3 digit numbers by 1 digit numbers. Take a look and see how we do it.

FRACTIONS

We have loved learning about fractions. We have used lots of concrete equipment, stem sentences and made our own generalisations.
