Geography

Intent

Our curriculum aims to instill in children a deep understanding of the world around them, fostering curiosity, empathy, and a sense of responsibility for the planet. Through the study of diverse landscapes, resources, and human activities, we seek to provoke and answer questions about how and why places change, how they are connected, and the impact of human actions. Our goal is to inspire a lifelong fascination with geography, equipping children with the knowledge and skills to navigate and contribute to an ever-changing world.

Implementation

Our geography curriculum is designed to meet National Curriculum requirements while prioritising key knowledge, skills, and concepts. Each year, children explore two or three areas of study, progressing from local environments to broader geographical contexts. Map skills and fieldwork are integrated throughout the curriculum, with a focus on developing practical and analytical skills. Visits and fieldwork opportunities are planned to provide firsthand experiences and enrich learning.

Knowledge organisers outline essential facts, vocabulary, and concepts for each area of study, ensuring progression and consistency across year groups. Medium-term plans detail the learning journey, incorporating resources from sources such as The Royal Geographical Society and the Geographical Association. Key concepts of Location & Place and Change sit at the heart of the curriculum, and teachers guide students' understanding and development of these concepts throughout their primary education.

Geographical skills, including map skills and fieldwork, are progressively taught from Year 1 to Year 6, aligned with National Curriculum expectations. Assessment documents and progression documents outline year group expectations and potential misconceptions, facilitating targeted teaching and support.

Through a carefully structured and engaging curriculum, we aim to nurture children's curiosity about the world and equip them with the knowledge, skills, and understanding to become informed global citizens.
