History

Intent

At Westerhope Primary School, we view the study of history as a vital exploration of the past, providing invaluable insights into the present and informing future developments for individuals, societies, and the global community. Our history curriculum aims to spark curiosity and engagement in our children, offering a comprehensive understanding of significant people, events, and civilizations that have shaped the world. Through the exploration of diverse historical topics, we aim to support our pupils to make connections with the world around them and develop a sense of their place in history.

Implementation

Our history curriculum aligns with National Curriculum requirements. We utilise a range of resources and strategies to engage students in historical inquiry and equip them with the knowledge and skills to succeed throughout primary school and beyond.

Each area of study begins with an open-ended enquiry question designed to stimulate curiosity and encourage deeper understanding. Central to our approach is the teaching of key historical concepts: change and continuity, cause and consequence, significance, and the use of historical evidence.

We have developed knowledge organisers and key historical concepts documents to support teachers to scaffold learning, ensure progression and development of historical knowledge. These resources provide a framework for teachers to plan lessons that develop students' understanding of historical concepts and facilitate their ability to apply historical skills.

We encourage a range of experiences, including school visits and guest speakers, to enrich students' understanding of history and provide firsthand opportunities for learning. Through our carefully planned and structured curriculum, we aim to inspire a lifelong appreciation for history and equip our students with the knowledge, skills, and understanding to engage critically with the world around them.
