Early Years Curriculum

Intent

At Westerhope Primary School we aim to give a child the best possible start to their school journey. High-quality teaching and learning experiences enable each child to thrive, supported by strong partnerships between staff, parents, and carers. Through an inclusive approach, we strive to provide equal opportunities for all children. Throughout their time in Nursery and Reception, we strive to nurture children’s personal and academic development.

Implementation

We follow the EYFS framework, which emphasises the prime areas of communication and language, physical development, and personal, social, and emotional development, alongside specific areas such as literacy and mathematics.

Our curriculum is enriched with initiatives like 'Hygge in the Early Years' and 'Wanderlust - Child Nature Study', providing opportunities for play-based learning and exploration of the natural world. Planning is carefully structured to cater to individual needs and interests, ensuring progression across all areas of learning. Staff employ a variety of teaching methods, including whole class, small group, and child-initiated activities.

Assessment is ongoing, with observations informing planning and next steps for learning. Regular checkpoints against EYFS guidance and the Reception Baseline Assessment help track children's progress. Transition processes are carefully managed, facilitating smooth progression between settings and year groups. Additionally, monitoring arrangements involve internal moderation and collaboration with external partners, ensuring consistency and quality across the EYFS provision.

Working in partnership with parents and carers is integral to our approach, with regular communication, workshops, and 'Stay and Play' sessions offered to support home learning.
