PSHE

Intent

Through Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) we equip students with the knowledge, skills, and understanding necessary to lead confident, healthy, and independent lives. At Westerhope, we aim to support students to make informed decisions regarding their wellbeing, health, relationships, and economic literacy, enabling them to thrive as individuals in modern society.

Implementation

Our PSHE curriculum is structured according to the needs of our children whilst meeting the statutory requirements for Relationships, Sex, and Health Education (RSHE). Year groups follow a thematic approach, covering the three core themes of Relationships, Living in the Wider World, and Health and Wellbeing.

Long-term plans detail the content each year group is to cover in line with the three core themes. Teachers utilise resources from sources such as The PSHE Association and use picture books as a stimulus to facilitate discussion and understanding.

PSHE learning takes various forms, including whole-class teaching, group activities, individual tasks, and assemblies, supplemented by outside speakers and cross-curricular lessons.

During PSHE sessions, students are encouraged to actively participate, fostering discussion and critical thinking. Circle time games may be incorporated to promote social interaction and break down barriers, enhancing the learning experience.

Our PSHE curriculum is designed to be inclusive and comprehensive, equipping students with the necessary skills and understanding to navigate the complexities of modern life confidently and responsibly. We strive to cultivate a positive learning environment conducive to personal growth and development.
